On Scalable Network Communication for Infrastructure-Vehicle Collaborative Autonomous Driving

Network communication is crucial for Infrastructure-Vehicle Cooperative Autonomous Driving (IVCAD), which can help to improve both driving safety and efficiency. Existing IVCAD systems either use RoadSide Units (RSUs) deployed sparsely in critical locations extend the on-board sensing, or RSUs densely a limited area provide sensing decision-making vehicles. For scenarios, numbers of vehicles are small, network solutions based on existing wireline cellular infrastructures their extensions. However, it remains unknown whether these scalable when system city-widely with hundreds thousands millions In this paper, we analyze requirements different types systems, show that large, using support incur very high extra facility cost. We further discuss how wireless mesh networks formed by themselves solve problem without any deployment facilities. To enable RSU network, framework coding highlight some research directions.
